Mercer County 4-H is one of several county 4-H programs in New Jersey working to help youth develop technology skills through the Apple Community Education Initiative. With extensive support from Apple in the form of technology, curriculum, and training, we recruit and support educators who deliver multi-session programs over the course of each semester.

This past semester, 4-H collaborated with Children’s Home Society to facilitate a digital storytelling program on Monday evenings at their Heritage North Family Success Center in Trenton. The mixed-aged teams learned the technical aspects of creating videos but also learned how videos can be a powerful way to share personal stories. We also provided a weekly program on coding and robotics for 8th graders at Achievers Early College Prep charter school, also in Trenton. Their students worked in pairs to develop a variety of codes to control Sphero robots in several different ways. Achievers is a new partner for us, and we are excited to be working with them.
Kaitlyn Gomez, an undergraduate student at The College of New Jersey, was our 4-H educator for both afterschool programs that concluded this past December. She is the third TCNJ student who has served in this role, gaining early field experience while studying to be a STEM teacher. Anyone interested in learning more about becoming a part-time educator for this afterschool initiative should contact Yaa Owusu-Mensah.
