At the very end of November, Yaa Owusu-Mensah joined Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Mercer County as our 4-H Program Associate focused on STEM initiatives. Yaa serves a leadership role in our Rutgers 4-H STEM Ambassadors, Tomorrow’s Innovators Science Saturday Program, STEM Pathfinders Summer Academy, STEM focused clubs and school enrichment, STEM Lab (small makerspace), and teen-led STEM outreach for youth from a variety of Trenton-based collaborating organizations. She also leads Mercer County’s involvement in the Apple Community Education Initiative, increasing access to STEM education throughout the Trenton area.

Yaa Owusu-Mensah has a Master of Science degree in cybersecurity from Montclair State University where she was a graduate assistant in the Computer Science Department, facilitating labs, workshops, and mentoring over 100 undergraduate students. While at Montclair, Yaa was also an ambassador with the Office of Global Engagement and earned the recognition of being the university’s best student employee in 2024. Yaa’s undergraduate degree in Communication Studies is from the University of Cape Coast, Ghana. While in Ghana, Yaa worked for the Commission for TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) where she led initiatives to increase girls’ participation in STEM, along with a variety of communications in support of their national education outreach programs.
Yaa is already busy engaging our Mercer youth with collaborative and hands-on projects that promote creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. We are excited about the impact that she is having on our STEM education initiatives and the young people we serve. If you haven’t already met Yaa, make sure you reach out or stop by next time you are in the office.
