This summer, youth attending the Mercer County 4-H camp were lucky enough to be taught improvisational quilting techniques by volunteers from the Princeton Sankofa Stitchers. The Princeton Sankofa Stitchers is a modern quilt guild that fosters the tradition of quilting arts in the African American Community.

The campers choose vibrant fabrics and cut them into unique patterns to form 12 x 12 squares. Upon completion of the squares, one of the guild members quilted the squares into a wall hanging, which will be on display at the Extension office.
4-H has many volunteer opportunities. One is a S.T.E.P. (short-term exploratory program) club.
S.T.E.P. clubs meet for a minimum of six hours (meeting times can be flexible) to complete the designated project. This allows the youth to experience a 4-H project in a condensed timeline. It also provides for a short-term commitment for the volunteer, with lasting results for the participants.
If you are interested in becoming a S.T.E.P. club volunteer or exploring any other volunteer opportunities 4-H offers, please contact Altaira Bejgrowicz.
