A dedicated team of Rutgers Master Gardeners of Mercer County met on February 13th to finalize plans for the 2025 growing season at the Parkside demonstration gardens right here at 1440 Parkside Ave! The Parkside Educational Garden committee and program coordinator, Justine Gray, discussed the four raised vegetable beds, triangle beds, and other garden beds along the gym and street side walls. These gardens are demonstration gardens, meaning we welcome everyone to come and be inspired for their own home or community garden. (Pictured below are some vibrant zinnia flowers!) We have a few themed gardens, including an herb garden where we partnered with the 4-H summer camp last year to pick fresh herbs for their pasta dishes. We also have a scent garden and many pollinator-friendly native plants to attract beneficial insects.

We’re planning some exciting events in the gardens this year, including a seedling giveaway on the afternoon of May 30th. We’ll have seedlings of vegetables like tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, and greens, as well as some flowers to encourage everyone to try their hand at gardening! We’ll also host a container gardening demonstration for those who want to start growing their own food but may not have access to a full garden. Learn tips and tricks for growing in small spaces!
