The sun was shining and the ground mostly dried out for our first workday with the Boys and Girls Club of Mercer County last Friday at the Centre Street Garden in Trenton. We crossed every task off our to-do list and even worked through what will hopefully be a rare NJ earthquake, though most of us assumed it was a train passing by. We cleaned up the beds with other volunteers from TCNJ, the NJ State Police, and Bristol Myers Squibb while discussing why we do what we do! We covered topics like leaving the leaves, the benefits of leaf litter, composting, herb care, and the importance of soil tests. We discussed native plants, weed identification, and classification with the Boys and Girls Club volunteers and staff. We had ten Rutgers Master Gardeners of Mercer County, ranging from longtime members to new interns! It was a great first partnership of the year as we got ready for more educational programs in the garden, including a seedling workshop and compost program. It was a beautiful day of collaboration, gardening, and education. Check out our video on our Facebook or Instagram to see more!
