School is back in session, and FCHS has started its “Cooking Matters for Teens” cooking series with the Christina Seix Academy. In this 6-week series, FCHS nutrition educators are teaching students about various cooking techniques and knife skills, how to make their own healthy snacks and drinks, and the importance of eating a “MyPlate” meal. Additionally, there is a new recipe demonstration and food tasting each week, and students get to take home a lesson incentive, including mini juicers, apple slicers, and cutting boards. So far, students enjoyed making their healthy beverages using strawberries, limes, mint, or kiwis to make fruited seltzers while learning about the amount of sugar in their favorite drinks. They also learned how to chiffonade lettuce for a “build-your-own” taco salad. Students are looking forward to making easy breakfast, dinner, and snack ideas in the upcoming weeks and sharing their experiences with their families at home!
