FCHS partners with The Food Trust, a nationally recognized nonprofit dedicated to ensuring that everyone has access to affordable, nutritious food and information to make healthy decisions, on a program called the Healthy Corner Store Network. In Trenton, FCHS works with three stores in the network, providing nutrition education lessons for customers, brief training on increasing healthy food sales for store owners, and funding for in-store materials or ideas that help customers “make the healthy choice the easy choice.” FCHS recently provided merchandising supplies to improve M & M Mini Market’s produce section. Attractive baskets and bamboo bins replaced cardboard boxes, and a new plastic bag stand provides customers with more convenient access to produce bags. Store staff were very grateful for the enhancement to the produce section and are looking forward to continued nutrition education lessons, restarting for their customers this spring.
