On May 10th, the Rutgers Master Gardeners of Mercer County hosted a drip irrigation event at the educational garden located at 1440 Parkside, Ewing. Members of the community education committee and the Parkside educational garden collaborated to create a presentation on optimizing irrigation in large home gardens and community gardens.
The presentation began with a PowerPoint overview of various irrigation types, with a specific focus on drip irrigation. It detailed various tools, components, and connectors that can be used to minimize water waste and maximize water efficiency. Through equations and examples, volunteers demonstrated problem-solving techniques and recommended tools for beginners. They also provided essential equations for calculating optimal water needs for plant success. Each attendee received a folder containing four university handouts, an equation sheet, and graph paper for notes. The speaker noted that if you have ever played with Lincoln Logs or Legos, you can do this!

We had an excellent turnout of nearly 40 attendees. The event concluded with a visit to our outdoor gardens (one raised bed pictured here), where four types of irrigation discussed in the presentation were showcased. This allowed attendees to see the systems in action, touch the materials, and gain a practical understanding of their functionality.
