Joan Healy, a Family and Community Health Sciences (FCHS) staff member, has been co-leading the Mercer County Food Stakeholders (MCFS) coalition (formerly Trenton Food Stakeholders) for over three years. The coalition was convened by Trenton Health Team (THT) to drive partner collaboration to address food system issues and food insecurity in Mercer County. On February 11th, over 40 people attended the group’s first in-person meeting since the pandemic.
One of the coalition members, Share My Meals, presented about a new statewide Meal Recovery Coalition they launched in 2024, which is an innovative program to collect surplus meals from food service providers and deliver them to local families in need. A second key topic focused on how partners who rely on volunteers could enhance recruitment efforts. Coalition members were so pleased to gather together, with some meeting each other in person for the very first time! It was a great day of sharing about how to improve healthy food access in Mercer County.
