Mercer County 4-H, in partnership with Millhill Child and Family Development Center, has hosted an after-school STEM club for Trenton area middle school students for the third year running. These after-school clubs serve to continue the students’ experience in our STEM summer camp. The session this past fall ran from September through December, during which students joined us once a week on Wednesdays after school to participate in hands-on STEM activities. We did basic circuitry, built and coded robots to avoid obstacles using motion sensors, engineered solutions to design challenges, and learned from guests who taught them about bees and marine life. The club ended with a small showcase of projects the students developed themselves. They worked on engineering design challenges, investigative science experiments, and CAD designs which were all 3-D printed. They educated the audience on their project, process, and the importance of learning science.
The club will start again in February with a similar curriculum and more involvement from community members.
