This October, Family and Community Health Sciences (FCHS) Nutrition Educators Angela Alexander de Ramos and Odalis Macario led seven families with teens and preteens in “Cooking Matters for Families,” a four-week, Spanish-language series at Children’s Home Society-South in Trenton. One highlight of the series was watching teens customize their green smoothie bowls with pumpkin and chia seeds, unsweetened coconut, and bright pink dragon fruit. Teens said they looked like the smoothie bowls from a popular franchise and noted that they wanted to recreate them again at home, experimenting with different ingredients and toppings. The series culminated with a “Hack Your Snack” lesson, where everyone peeled, chopped, mashed, cooked, and stirred apples to make fresh apple sauce from scratch! Everyone was amazed at how sweet it was, even with no added sweeteners. Parents reported that their children had more interest in cooking and assisting in the kitchen and were more open to trying healthy foods. One teen put it best when he said, “¡Cosas saludables pueden ser ricas!”, meaning “Healthy things can be delicious!”
