On November 13th, Mercer County Horticulturist Justine Gray led a hands-on talk with twenty-two residents of Mercer County about growing great garlic. The group spent some time discussing how to purchase the proper seed garlic and how to plant, care for, and harvest this resilient crop with Gray, who has years of experience growing this crop commercially and personally.
After a presentation at the Parkside office, the audience got to try splitting garlic to prepare the seed for planting and identifying which cloves would be suitable for planting and which should not be planted and used in the kitchen instead. The group went outside to see Gray plant with some volunteers at the educational gardens outside the building. Using tools that can be easily purchased or even made, the group planted about 100 cloves of German White hardy garlic that they hope to harvest in the summer of 2025. More events like this will be added to the 2025 schedule, so make sure you get on our email list and do not miss the next one!
