September 7th was a gorgeous day to talk all about INSECTS! The rain held off, and the Rutgers Master Gardeners of Mercer County worked with over ten other community partners to host their annual Insect Fest. The event was a blast and boasted about 500 attendees despite the calls for rain. We had folks of all ages in costume.
We added two new activities- a story-time reading of a book on the importance of bees and a craft exercise using natural materials like leaves and pinecones to create your own insect! The butterfly tent and live bee hive were great chances for people to get up close and personal with these common and important insects. As always, the “Bugs in Water” and “Bugs Galore” were a huge hit with countless visitors and required extra volunteers to staff that tent. The Mercer Educational Garden was looking its best for this event, which is now in its 20th year, while the Master Gardeners celebrate their 30th year of service to Mercer County!
