In August, FCHS partnered with 4-H Youth Development to provide a week of fun nutrition and cooking education lessons for youth from CYO of Mercer County – East State Street. The curriculum, entitled “Food Smarts for Kids,” taught the campers about setting SMART goals for a healthy lifestyle, the difference between whole, minimally processed, and ultra-processed foods, and how to be smart food consumers. Campers enjoyed engaging in MyPlate bingo, a sugar shocker guessing game, and physical activity charades.
In each lesson, nutrition educator Cate Diamond led the children in preparing their own meals with tasks such as cutting up bananas and selecting healthy toppings for smoothie bowls, cracking eggs for a breakfast scramble, chopping cheese and chicken for snack skewers, dicing mango and cherries for fruit pizza, and more! The kids loved the hands-on aspect of the lessons and commented on how they’d like to help their families cook at home!
