As part of FCHS’ partnership with the Trenton Housing Authority, FCHS Nutrition Educator Angela Alexander De Ramos offered a nutrition class in February at one of their senior housing sites. Angela taught an “Eat Smart, Live Strong” lesson to encourage increased fruit and vegetable consumption and regular physical activity and to offer suggestions on overcoming common obstacles to eating healthy and being active. During the physical activity portion of the class, residents loosened up with some gentle chair stretches and many also chose to do the standing exercises and got their blood pumping! Participants enjoyed the cooking tips given during the Minestrone Soup cooking demonstration and raved about the flavorful soup. Most importantly, by the end of the lesson, even participants who openly admitted they rarely eat fruits and vegetables said that they wanted to make more of an effort to add them to their meals because of the health benefits they learned about!
