This December, Angela Alexander De Ramos, an FCHS Nutrition Educator, led a “Just Say Yes to Fruits and Vegetables” class for fourteen students during a Life Skills Class at Isles Youth Institute in Trenton. Students learned to read the Nutrition Facts labels of various drinks and were surprised at the high amount of added sugar in sports drinks and chocolate milk. During a smoothie-making competition, two teams with access to the same ingredients (including fresh and frozen fruits, yogurt, and spinach) competed to make the best smoothie. “This is fire!” one teen announced proudly. “We should buy some fruits so we can make smoothies every day!” another suggested. The hands-on lesson clearly impacted students, and they not only learned communication skills and how to work together during the activity but are also prepared with tools to make healthier drink choices every day.
