This fall, an exciting collaboration is currently underway between FCHS, the Children’s Home Society, and Christina Seix Academy. FCHS is providing “Just Say Yes to Fruits and Vegetables” lessons to 20 families from both organizations over five weeks. Families also receive a $50 food bag at each class, which includes locally sourced, healthy foods such as meats, grains, dairy products, and fresh produce from a local food aggregator, Bone-In-Farm. FCHS Nutrition Educators lead nutrition lessons, and all families participate in hands-on cooking using items from their food bag.
Parents and their children also gain valuable nutrition information, such as how to identify high-fiber foods and how to read beverage labels, empowering them to make healthier choices! One 5-year-old child proudly reported, after having learned how to prepare a breakfast scramble the week prior, “I cooked it three times, even once for my neighbor!” Even reluctant teens join in on the fun! Families cooking together…PRICELESS!
