Three trees were planted at Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Mercer County. Two red oaks (Quercus rubra) have been planted in the memory of Joe Scarlata and are a direct result of memorial fund donations in his honor. Joe graduated as a Rutgers Master Gardener in 2007 and contributed over 1,300 hours to the county. Joe spent much of his volunteer efforts as the MG photographer at events and classes. He also made needed tools to enhance safety at public events. His wife, Betty, continues to volunteer as a Rutgers Master Gardener. The third tree is an Eastern redbud (Cercis canadensis), a tree native to New Jersey with showy hot pink flowers before the leaves develop in the spring.
