Mercer County 4-H supports several community organizations by providing summer camp programs. One of those organizations is Urban Promise of Trenton. Starting in late June, Mercer County 4-H traveled to Urban Promise’s Camp Truth, where we provided STEM programming to over 40 youth participants. During our time at Camp Truth, 4-H engaged campers with topics like DNA extraction, civil engineering, structural engineering, and capillary action. The young participants ranged in age from 1st to 6th grade. The campers were active listeners and active participants in science discovery. When asked to reflect on the topics covered, they could summarize concepts, retell their observations, and make connections to real-world applications. As a parting gift, the campers got to take home a necklace with the DNA they extracted.
Mercer County 4-H work with Urban Promise is just the beginning of summer camp season and STEM programming. Currently, we provide cooking, sewing, and crafting camps to other community partners. We also facilitate a 6-week STEM-focused camp for Trenton area middle school students in July and August.
