In March at Gregory Elementary School, an FCHS Nutrition Educator taught “Food Smarts Kids,” a lesson series that encourages children to eat healthy and increase their physical activity. Fifteen 2nd-grade students participated in the six classes and really enjoyed tasting some new fruits, such as kiwi, papaya, and pomegranate. They also made their own healthy recipes, such as fruit salsa and tofu tacos! The students found one activity, in particular, to be very eye-opening! When they counted out the high number of sugar packets in various beverages, they were shocked and very interested in learning how to choose healthier options. The children also had fun during the physical activity portion of the lesson, where they practiced balance exercises and yoga. Everyone learned a lot and enjoyed the classes so much that they asked for more classes in the future!
