Starting in September, 4-H has run a JavaScript series for middle school youth. Computer Science is a growing field with in-demand positions. According to the US Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, the computer and information technology field is expected to grow 13% in the coming years- faster than the average growth rate of all occupations! In an effort to help prepare our youth to meet these demands, 4-H constructed a 10-session series focused on teaching youth basic JavaScript coding with graphics, logical composition, and data handling. The skills developed in the program are skills the youth can apply to any other coding language, making their transition to other programming environments that much easier.
After three sessions, the program participants have already developed the ability to define and assign variables, intake and output data, and output graphics onto a screen.
