For the past six months, Mercer County 4-H has partnered with the City of Trenton’s Recreation Department to provide educational programs for three afterschool sites.
The students from Ike Williams, West Ward, and Sam Naples Community Centers enjoyed monthly hands-on art activities. The participants were in kindergarten through sixth grades.
Why spend money on a greeting card when you can make one! The first activity was making three-dimensional greeting cards. When do you send a card? How do you address an envelope? What needs to be on the envelope for the post office to deliver it? These were a few of the lesson objectives.
The next activity focused on making a geodesic ball out of recycled paper. This lesson incorporated math skills along with logic. How can twenty circles become a ball? The students enjoyed the challenges and the success of this project! Who knew math could be so fun?
