On a chilly November day, two of PJ Hill Elementary’s 2nd and 3rd grade classes were treated to the third lesson of the Food Smart Kids series. The focus? A lesson on whole grains paired with a warm and customizable oatmeal!
Led by Nutrition Educator Cate Diamond, students learned about the power of whole grains. Kids acted as food detectives to locate whole grain foods by scouring food labels and ingredient lists. They discovered how a bowl of oatmeal, a whole grain, could be transformed into a delicious and nutritious meal by adding a variety of toppings.
After an engaging lesson, it was time for the hands-on part! Students donned their aprons and got to work, chopping up their own fruit to create personalized oatmeal creations. The classroom was filled with the delightful aroma of cinnamon. As they enjoyed their warm bowls of oatmeal, students discussed the benefits of eating whole grains and the importance of a filling breakfast each morning.
