The newest group of Rutgers Master Gardeners to be trained in Mercer County learned about local soils from Meredith Melendez, Agricultural Agent. This class was designed to provide foundational knowledge for these future volunteers to respond to Mercer County residents’ gardening questions effectively and efficiently. Some key topics the interns learned about were the diversity of soils found in the county, soil pH and its impact on plant health, and why soil testing is often the first step in answering homeowners’ questions.
